Tourist information - Denmark

Denmark is a constitutional monarchy in north-western Europe, the southernmost of the Scandinavian countries. Officially the Kingdom of Denmark (Danish Kongeriget Danmark), it is bounded on the north by the Skagerrak, an area of the North Sea, on the east by the Kattegat (an extension of the Skagerrak) and the Øresund, a strait linking the Kattegat and the Baltic Sea; on the south by the Baltic Sea, a strait called the Fehmarn, and Schleswig-Holstein, Germany; and on the west by the North Sea. Copenhagen (Danish København) is the capital and largest city.

Climate

Denmark has a temperate maritime climate. The mean temperature in summer is about 16° C in winter, about 0° C. Wind changes cause varied day-to-day temperature changes.

Principal Cities

For civic administrative purposes, Denmark is divided into the borough of Frederiksberg, the city of Copenhagen, and then 14 counties: Århus, Bornholm, Copenhagen, Frederiksborg, Fyn, Nordjylland, Ribe, Ringkøbing, Roskilde, Sønderjylland, Storstrøm, Vejle, Vestsjælland, and Viborg. The capital is Copenhagen.

Frederiksberg places of interest include the Royal Porcelain Works, a faience factory, and breweries.

Copenhagen (Danish København)is the capital city of Denmark and of Copenhagen County. Copenhagen is a major seaport and commercial center. Copenhagen is sited on two islands, Sjælland Island and Amager Island. These two sections of the city are connected by bridges.

Among the city's principal places of interest are the cathedral, Vor Frue Kirke (Church of Our Lady), built in the 12th century; Charlottenborg Palace constructed in 1672, Prinsens Palace, the former royal palace of Christiansborg, the Thorvaldsen Museum, the Royal Theater and the Royal Library. The Tivoli Gardens, a famed amusement park, is a leading attraction in the city.
