Italy (Italian Italia) is a republic in southern Europe. It is the seat of the papacy of the Roman Catholic church and is recognized as an independent state by the Italian government. The dome of Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City dominates the Roman skyline. Rome has been called the Eternal City, a title earned because of its importance as one of the great cities of Western civilization. Since 1871 it has been the capital of all Italy.

MOTORWAYS

Motorways are known as Autostrades and signs are green.
Most require the payment of a toll payable in cash, a Viacard (purchased from tollbooths, fuel stations, some banks, tourist offices, and tobacconists) or a credit card. Viacards can be used in automatic and manual booths.

SEAT BELTS

Front seat = Compulsory
Rear seat = Compulsory if fitted
Children = Child safety harnesses are compulsory for 3 to 12 year olds.

DRIVING LICENCE

Minimum Driving age 18.

International Driving Permit is required unless you have a Photo card licence.

FINES

Motoring offences attract a fine where foreigners must pay 25 percent on-the-spot .
An official receipt should be issued.

Blood / Alcohol limit is 0.08%.

PARKING

Blue zones operate in most major towns.
