At last count there were something like 58 beaches around the island, however only a few are accesible by bus. Most need either a car, a 4x4, a cross-country motorbike, a walk or quite a few a boat.... In the summer the water temperature can get upto around 28 degrees, so there is no need for that "the waters too cold" excuse.
Also the myths about jellyfish are unfounded as you need to go a long way out before you encounter them and they are mostly harmless anyway.
It is definitely worth purchasing a snorkel though, as you only need to go a few yards out in most of the secluded bays/beaches before you encounter all sorts of fish etc, and if you fancy a bit of getting back to nature there are a number of unofficial nudist beaches around the Island.
