1930: Archie Stewart, descendant of Lachlan Stewart, donates 220 acres of land to the City of Newburgh for an airport.
1934: The City of Newburgh transfers the land to the U.S. Government for $1.
1939: U.S. Military Academy (West Point) builds first airfield at Stewart for cadet aviation training.
1942: Stewart Airfield is dedicated as the "Wings of West Point".
1948: Stewart Airfield becomes Stewart Air Force Base.
1970: Stewart Air Force Base is deactivated and acquired by New York State which expands it by acquiring an additional 8,000 acres of land.
1981: January 25 - 52 American hostages held in Iran returned home to Stewart.
1982: The New York State legislature transfers operating responsibility for Stewart International Airport to the New York State Department of Transportation from the Metropolitan Transit Authority, mandating aviation and other economic development.
1985: New York State Department of Transportation and Urban Development Corporation in partnership begin planning development of acreage known as Stewart Properties.

W. R. Grace & Co. completes construction of a corporate airplane hangar, making it the first private company to invest in the Airport.

Child World becomes the first tenant in the Stewart Industrial Park, opening a Northeastern distribution center.

1986: Stewart Industrial Park is dedicated.

Grand Union Company opens a production kitchen facility in the Industrial Park.

1987: American Express Company opens a hangar facility to house its corporate fleet.

CRS Business Computers, Inc. moves its company headquarters to the Stewart Industrial Park.

The Anheuser-Busch Company's Metal Containers Corporation opens its production plant at Stewart.

1988 Federal Express Corporation opens its city station in the Stewart Industrial Park.

Cessna Citation Aircraft Company builds a facility at the Airport that provides service to Citation owners in the Northeast.

Johnson Controls, Inc. opens a facility that produces automobile seats for General Motors Corporation's facility in Tarrytown, NY.

1989 American Airlines announces the beginning of scheduled passenger service at Stewart International Airport.
1990 American Airlines begins commercial passenger service at Stewart with three daily roundtrips to both Chicago and Raleigh/Durham.

American Eagle offers service to JFK.

United Express begins service to Washington's Dulles International Airport and Boston's Logan Airport.

Stewart International Airport opens its new 50,000 square foot air cargo building.

The U.S. Postal Service opens its new 300,000 square foot General Mail Distribution Facility.

Sky Chefs opens an in-flight catering kitchen facility in the Stewart Industrial Park.

1991 US Air begins service to Pittsburgh. Its subsidiary, US Air Express, begins service to Philadelphia and Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

Delta Airlines begins non-stop service to Atlanta.

Stewart International Airport is selected as the first facility to receive $5 million in funding under the FAA's new Military Airport Program. The new program provides money for Capital Improvements to airports that were either former military facilities or are currently military/civil aircraft use facilities.

The FAA awards the Airport a $900,000 grant to fund a Master Plan Update, conduct appropriate environmental reviews, and prepare a Noise Capability Study.

The Airport receives an additional $13 million in federal funding for rehabilitation of its fuel farm, Terminal parking ramp, and part of its taxiway system and the upgrade of its airfield signage system.

Travel Impressions begins weekly seasonal charger flights to Cancun, Mexico.

1992 In April, Stewart International Airport receives $3 million from the FAA's Military Airport Program for Terminal expansion.

Trans World Express begins service to JFK International Airport.

US Air Express announces non-stop service to Washington National Airport.

In June, US Air Express commences daily flights to New York's LaGuardia Airport.

United Express starts daily service to Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

In October, weekly seasonal charter flights to Las Vegas and Orlando begin.

In December, weekly seasonal charter flights to Cancun, Mexico resume.

Stewart begins its Master Plan Update Project, which includes a Part 150 Aircraft Noise Compatibility and Environmental Reviews.

1993 The first Master Plan Update Working Group meeting is held.

In May, Atlantic Coast Airlines moves its aircraft maintenance operation to Stewart.

In June, US Air Express begins service to Syracuse/Buffalo.

In December, the second Master Plan Public Information Meeting is held.

1994 In May, US Air offers service to Charlotte, NC

American Airlines' Corporate Real Estate Department is named project manager for the Airport's Terminal Expansion Project.

The third Master Plan Update Public Information Meeting is held in September.

In October, AirTran Airways launches non-stop service to Orlando.

The preliminary concept design for the Airport's expanded passenger Terminal is released.

In November, Carnival Airlines inaugurated roundtrip flights to Fort Lauderdale.

1995 In May, Midway Airlines launches daily roundtrip service to Raleigh/Durham.

Also in May, Governor Pataki creates, by executive order, the New York State Council on Privatization.

In October, NELCO opens a facility at Stewart Industrial Park. NELCO is a manufacturer of copper laminated circuitry for the electronics industry.

In November, a passenger facility charge begins as a means of providing a user fee mechanism to fund capital projects.

1996 In January 1996, Governor Pataki announces plans to begin process to privatize SWF under an FAA Pilot Program.

In April, construction begins for a 78-room Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, the first hotel to be located at Stewart International Airport.

In June, United Parcel Service begins jet cargo operations as it opens its Stewart Gateway.

In December, Amscan, Inc. provider of paper party goods, occupies 50 percent of former Child World Building.

1997 In April, Courtyard by Marriott opens its new 78-room hotel, the only hotel on Stewart International Airport property.

Rifton Aviation was granted full FBO status at Stewart by DOT on June 11.

In September, the new Stewart International Airport Passenger Terminal Concourse opens featuring seven jet-boarding bridges, bright and spacious gate areas and electronic flight information displays.

In October, Federal Express announces construction of a new 125,000 square foot city sort center at the Stewart Industrial Park, to replace their existing 39,000 square foot facility in the Industrial Park.

1998 Stewart Airport benefactor Thomas "Archie" Stewart dies at the age of 96 on March 11.

In April, New York State Department of Transportation and Empire State Development Corporation name National Express Group PLC as the preferred bidder to lease Stewart International Airport.

The Expanded Passenger Terminal is officially dedicated on April 17 to coincide with the eighth anniversary of passenger service.

1999 Sept. 24, Governor Pataki signs a 99 year lease agreement with National Express to operate Stewart International Airport.
2000 On Feb. 1, New York's Attorney General Eliot Spitzer approves privatization lease.

New York Comptroller H. Carl McCall approved Stewart lease on March 8.

The FAA completed the privatization application review on March 21.

On March 31, Stewart becomes the nation's first commercial airport to be privatized.

Rifton Aviation dedicated a new 120,000 sq. ft corporate aircraft hangar on Sept. 14.

2001 Charles G. Seliga, former General Manager of JFK International Airport, joins Stewart International Airport as Managing Director.

General Electric finalized an agreement to build a 120,000 square foot hangar at Stewart.

Stewart received the second ILS (Instrument Landing System) on the east end of Runway 9-27

Stewart International Airport participated on a Trade Mission to Korea and Taiwan under the auspices of The Hudson Valley World Trade Center, in an effort to lure foreign investors and cargo operators to the Hudson Valley

New Stewart Airport entrance road (C Street) project began construction.

Republic Parking System, Inc. of Chattanooga, TN is selected as the operator of the parking facilities at Stewart.

Stewart Regional Alliance is revived. The Stewart Regional Alliance is a group of business people from the Hudson Valley who realize the economic importance of supporting the revitalization of Stewart International Airport

National Express Corp. was honored with the Award for Foreign Direct Investment in the Hudson Valley at the Averell Harriman International Awards dinner held at Tappan Hill in Tarrytown

National Express Corp. wins the 2000 Business of the Year award from The Chamber of Commerce of Orange County

TARDIS (Terminal Automated RADAR Display and Information System) was installed in the Control Tower

North Cargo Hill has been demolished making room for a 70,000 sq. ft. usable cargo facility, which will accommodate at least 2 wide body planes.

C.A.S. Handling Company signed on at Stewart as a new Fixed Based Operator

Runway 9-27 overlay was completed in August, providing, in effect, a brand new 11,818 ft. runway.

With the demise of Midway Airlines, Stewart loses its flights to Raleigh Durham.

House of Representatives approved a transportation appropriation bill that includes $6.7 million for a new Air Traffic Control Tower at the airport.

2002 A Facility Inspection Station was inaugurated.

Low cost carrier, Southeast Airlines, began service to Newark and Fort Lauderdale on September 12.

Automatic External Defibrillator units were installed in the passenger terminal.

The groundbreaking for the new Air Traffic Control Tower took place on October 21.

Clough Harbor Associates was awarded the contract to complete the Airport Master Plan.

The Federal Aviation Administration gave National Express Corporation and Robinson Aviation, the operator of the air traffic control tower, a "None in a Million Award" for having one million operations without any errors.

On November 21st, Southeast Airlines started service to Sanford/Orlando International Airport.
